The Face of the Homeless

To see the face of the homeless population today, one would have to kneel down to look because the majority are children living with single parents in shelters. According to many studies widely published in the media, families make up the fastest growing segment of homeless population. The systemic reasons behind the rise in poverty figures matters little to the families who end up in the county homeless shelters. They simply have survival on their minds—getting employment, providing food, shelter and clothing for their families.

What is Homelessness?

Homelessness is defined as persons who are: sleeping in places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks, and abandoned buildings; sleeping in emergency shelters; living in transitional or supportive housing for homeless persons but who originally came from streets or emergency shelters.

Facts: Faces of the homeless

  • Young adult parents (men and women) with jobs but unable to afford housing.

  • Mothers transitioning from welfare to work.

  • Women and children fleeing domestic violence situations in the home.

  • Teens, known as the “throw-away-kids” population, whose parents are caught in the syndrome of negative societal and social issues such as drug abuse and prostitution.

  • Teens aging out of the foster care system who find themselves without the skills needed to function as adults.

  • Young adults suffering from a childhood of abuse, neglect and drug addiction, set up in a pattern that was stacked against them long before the turned 18.

  • Most homeless people are unemployed, and once without a home, it becomes very difficult to get a job. Many people find themselves trapped in a cycle that if they cannot get a home, they cannot find a job, and if they cannot get a job, they cannot get a home.

  • Veterans: nearly ¼ of homeless people in the US are veterans.
