Founded in the fall of 1968 by Melanie Russell (Lee) and Rosalind Thompkins (Lynch), the Howard Gospel Choir (HGC) was the first college choir of its kind in the nation. Since its debut performance in the spring of 1969, HGC has pioneered an international legacy in gospel music ministry. The choir boasts an active roster that consists of students and alumni from Howard University, as well as others from the community. In addition to distinguished professionals in every discipline, past members of this award-winning ensemble include Grammy Award© winners Richard Smallwood and Coré Cotton (Sounds of Blackness), as well as Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark of the legendary Clark Sisters, and R&B star Ángela Winbush.

The Alfred A. Owens Chorale is an entity in the music ministry of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church (GMCHC) and is under the leadership of Joe Mangum, the Minister of Music. The choir is named in honor of the Vice-Bishop of the Mount Calvary Holy Churches of America, Inc. and the Pastor of GMCHC, Bishop Alfred A. Owens, Jr.

The mission of the Alfred A. Owens Chorale is to be a body of believers anointed, gifted and/or talented to minister in music. That we as a corporate body are pleasing to God that He might endow us to produce a perfected praise unto the people. And, that each member is committed to living the life they sing about and is dedicated to ensuring holiness is a lifestyle rather than just a concept.
